Conventions

It is suggested that this page is printed and used as a quick reference guide.

The following conventions have been used to record and display auction results by the sevice.
  • General Information

    1. The service provides auction sale results.
    2. Sale results are recorded for Australian and New Zealand artists or artists who have painted in either country. Post July 2010 Sale Results are recorded for all artists who have sold artworks in either country.
    3. Sale prices are listed as provided by the auctioneers concerned.
    4. The price recorded is hammer price, conforming to the internationally accepted price recording standard.
    5. The service calculates gross price, including buyers premium and GST if applicable based off the Hammer Price..
    6. NZ sale prices are converted to Australian Dollars based on the exchange rate on the sale day.
    7. Prices on this website are rounded to the nearest AUD$5.00
    8. Record prices for all artists are determined based on the Australian Dollar amount.
    9. Day of month for sales prior to June 30 1999 is not recorded. Dates prior are displayed mmm.yy (eg. Jun.99) and post are displayed dd.mm.yy (eg. 13.06.08).
    10. The service sometimes stores artwork images.
  • Artist Search (Subscribers)

    1. If an artist has biographical information recorded the field 'Biog' is set to 'Yes'. Biographical information may range from a few words to a paragraph.
    2. The service does not differentiate artists as belonging to Australia or New Zealand. The service differentiates in which country the artist has made sales. If 'NZ' is set to 'Yes' it indicates that the artist has made sales in New Zealand (and possibly Australia). If 'NZ' is left blank the sales have been made in Australia.

  • Artist Detail Overview (Subscribers)

    1. If the artist has biographical information it is displayed.
    2. Total Hammer Value and Total Gross Value are displayed. This is a cumulative figure for all artist sales.
    3. The Record Hammer Price and the Record Gross Price is displayed. Also listed is the year in which the record was achieved and also the auction house attributed with achieving the record price. The record price may be achieved by more then one auction house. The auction house attributed with the record price is the first auction house which achieved the record price. The auction house is displayed in italics if the record price was achieved by more then one auction house.
    4. Every Artist who has made sales in more then one year has a graphical display of Total Sales Results.
    5. Subscribers may define and maintain their own watchlists. Graphical analysis of sales data by year and media group is available for artists that are added to the watchlist. View Watchlist User Guide.
    6. F: & T: refer to Year/Month From and Year/Month To.
    7. Select the button next to the field name and the results will be sorted by that field. In this example the results will be sorted by Gross Price.
    8. Select a value from the list and the results will be filtered by that value. In this example the results will show sales by all auction Houses. Note: An auction house will only appear in the list if the artist has made sales at that auction house. Similarly, for Date, Price & Media Group the list will only contain values if the artist sale results meet that filter criteria.
    9. The summary of information that match the filter criteria are listed.
    10. Signed, Year. 's' signed, 'us' unsigned. This field may also record the year as found on the picture. A blank value does not indicate the artwork was not signed or dated, it indicates the information was not provided by the auction house.
    11. Each artwork sold has the hammer price recorded. Gross Price (including Buyers Premium and GST if applicable) is calculated based off the hammer price following the rules defined for each Auction House.
    12. If the Hammer Price has GST applied the price is preceded by a *.
