James Ashton was born in the Isle of Man, father of Sir William Ashton. A marine painter, he founded the Norwood Art School in Adelaide in 1885. On a return visit to Britain circa 1895 he studied under the Royal Academy marine artist Henry Moore. Ashton is represented in the Art Gallery of South Australia. Edit or add to this biography
