Richard Read, Junior (c1796-1862) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in Ireland about1796, Richard Read (Jnr) arrived in Australia as a free settler in 1819. Apparently estranged from his father, Richard Read Snr, he set up as a portrait and historical painter, advertising in the 'Sydney Gazette' in 1821. Read moved to Victoria in the late 1850s where he died in 1862. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, and in the National Mitchell and La Trobe libraries.
