Biographical Information

Born in Melbourne in 1924, Robert Perring studied art at Swinburne Technical College, later working as an illustrator for Readers Book club, art design at the Melbourne Herald Newspaper, Southdown Press as Art Director for TV Week and New Idea.

His first exhibition, at Victorian Arts Society gallery, was followed by a number of successful exhibitions at the Argus Building in the CBD. Further exhibitions in Sydney, suburban Melbourne and Canberra. His works featured country Victoria, Melbourne terraced houses and historical subjects such as Captain Cook in Australia (mounted for the Bi-Centenial in 1970), missionary Daisy Bates, who worked with indigenous people in outback South Australia, the building of the Westgate Bridge, 'Conroy's Gap' (poem by Banjo Paterson), and Collins Street circa 1890 and the now long gone Mentone Racecourse and Port Phillip Bay.

Recent works are vibrant images, stylised content sometimes touching on topical events and most certainly evidencing the seventy (70) years at the easel.

He lists Pablo Picasso, Sidney Nolan, Geoffrey Smart and Vincent Van Gogh as major influences Now in his 90's, he still paints everyday. Edit or add to this biography
