Ron Harbeck (1921-97) Australia

Biographical Information

Ronald George Harbeck was born in Trafalgar, Victoria, on 15 January 1921. He attended Yallorn Technical School and trained as a mechanic. From November 1941 he served in the RAAF, seeing war service in the South West Pacific Area as a Wireless Air Gunner (WAG) in Bristol Beaufighters, for which he was Mentioned in Despatches and later rose to the rank of Warrant Officer.

After discharge from the RAAF in June 1947, Ron studied art at the Swinburne Technical College, Melbourne, before embarking on a career in the commercial art industry.

After retirement from business and the death, after a long illness, of his wife Susan in January 1984, Ron resumed his interest in fine art, producing a series of screenprints at the innovative Larry Rawlings Fine Art Print Workshop at 424 Nicholson Street, North Fitzroy, Victoria.

Ron died in Melbourne on 23 November 1997.

In 2008, the National Gallery of Australia purchased with the assistance of the Gordon Darling Australia Pacific Print Fund, in celebration of the National Gallery of Australia’s 25th Anniversary, a collection of 18 of Ron’s work between 1984 and 1989, as printer’s proofs.
