Sheila Hawkins (1905-99) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia in 1905, Sheila Hawkins spent most of her childhood in Perth before moving with her family to Melbourne. She studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School, leaving early to work as a commercial artist. In 1931 Hawkins moved to London, where she eventually married. She continued to exhibit her work and also to write and illustrate children's books. During World War II she worked at the RAAF Headquarters. After the war Hawkins worked for several publishers as an illustrator, and became well known for her humorous animal illustrations. She had several solo exhibitions and visited Australia on occasions. Her work is represented in the National Gallery of Victoria, the Australian War Memorial and Mitchell Library.
