Biographical Information

Born in England in 1887, Ure Smith was perhaps Australia's most important promoter of the arts. He came to Australia with his family in 1888. A painter, etcher and illustrator in his own right, he founded the influential magazine 'Art in Australia' in 1916, editing and publishing it for the next 22 years. He also edited and published other art magazines, books and annuals. His own works are represented in the print collections of all state galleries and in the British Museum.
