Thomas Tyrwhitt Balcombe (1810-61) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in St Helena in 1810, Balcombe arrived in Australia in 1825. The son of colonial secretary, William Balcombe, he became a draughtsman for the Surveyor-General's Department, a position he held until his death in 1861. By 1837 he had become a proficient painter and illustrator, specialising in Aboriginal and native animal paintings. His works are represented in the Mitchell Library, Sydney.
