Wes Placek (1947-.) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in West Germany in 1947, Wes Placek arrived in Australia at the age of three. He studied at Preston Institute of Technology and Monash University and was awarded MA Visual Arts.

He held his first one man exhibition at Pinacotheca Gallery Melbourne in 1971 and founded Artists Space Gallery in 1979 Melbourne. He has exhibited his work with international and local artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Bettina Rheims, Richard Otremba and Philip Guston.

He has painted large abstract-expressionist paintings and small scale paintings of still life. Placek has won a number of awards and his work is represented in the Australian National Collection and in the National Gallery of Victoria.

Since the 90's his art has consisted of painting, photography, graphics and the digital media. Much of his work is inspired by Modernism and the Urban Landscape. His current paintings and photographs deal with issues of geometry, colour, gesture and the painterly.
