William Montgomery (1850-1927) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in England in 1850, William Montgomery arrived in Australia in 1886. He studied at the School of Art in Newcastle-on-Tyne and in his final year was awarded one of only three National Art Scholarships that year to study at South Kensington School of Art, now the Royal College of Art. He was employed by the leading London stained glass firm, Clayton & Bell, before joining Franz Mayer & Co., Munich. Over the next seven years he not only designed windows he also trained others in the English style of glass painting. A painter as well as stained glass window designer he was a foundation member of the Victorian Art Society and became President of its Council from 1912-1916.

He was a trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria. His commissions included stained glass windows at Geelong Grammar School and the Bathurst Cathedral. William Montgomery died in 1927. Edit or add to this biography
