William Crothers Fitler (1857-1915) Australia

Biographical Information

An American black and white as well as colour tonalist landscape painter, Fitler was born in Philadelphia 1857 and studied art at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts,

Fitler came to Australia with S.B. Schell and W.T. Smedley to work on the production of the 'Picturesque Atlas of Australia from 1884-1888.

Little is known of the artist's later period. He is believed to have returned to America as a condition of his assignment. Fitler married a divorced American artist Ms.Claude Raquet Hirst at New York in 1901.

Fitler has many colour paintings to his credit in art galleries across America, and in Australia many paintings in each state gallery as well as in Brisbane, including one of The Queensland Club from the Botanic Gardens, and also Queensland Parliament House.
