Biographical Information

William Lister Lister was born in Manly, Sydney, in 1859.

He moved to Yorkshire England in 1867 and studied art at Bedford, and then France for two years

He began his working life in the drawing office of the Fairfield Engineering Works and then moved to Glasgow where he joined the St Mungo Art Club and in 1876, at the age of 17, exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy.

He returned to Sydney to live in 1888 and was President of Royal Art Society of N.S.W., from 1897-1941 as well as a member of the board of trustees, A.G.N.S.W., 1900-43.

He exhibited with The British Empire Society of Artists, the Royal Society of Painters in Oils and the Royal Society of British Artists, London.

He was celebrated in Australia mainly as a painter of large, shimmering seascapes and coastal vistas, and as a seven times winner of the Wynne Prize. He was killed in a street accident on 6 November 1943.
