Benjamin Duterreau (1767-1851) Australia

Biographical Information

Benjamin Duterrau, a watchmaker's son, was born in London of Huguenot descent and served an apprenticeship to an engraver. He later established himself as a portrait and genre painter and, between 1817 and 1827, exhibited regularly with the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. In August 1832, Duterrau arrived in Van Diemen's Land accompanied by his daughter, Sarah, and opened a studio in Hobart Town. He was then aged sixty-five years. An advertisement in the Hobart Town Courier of 21 December 1832 states that 'having arranged the paintings which he recently brought with him from London, he will be happy to exhibit them to such ladies or gentlemen as may wish to view or to purchase any of them, as well as to follow his profession of portrait painting. ' Over the next decade, he focused his attention on the Tasmanian Aborigines and the attempts made to resettle them by the Methodist 'protector' George Augustus Robinson, producing a series of major oil paintings on this subject. Duterrau is also known to have executed some portraits of European settlers during the 1830s and 1840s including Eliza, Lady Arthur and Governor Arthur (National Library of Australia), Portrait of Emmely Frances Watchorn (Art Gallery of South Australia) and The Walker Children (Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery).
