James Erskine Calder (1808-82) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in England in 1808, Calder spent some time with the Royal Ordinance Survey before being appointed Assistant Surveyor in Van Diemen's Land in 1829. He was an energetic surveyor and explorer and made many expeditions throughout Tasmania. In 1859 he became Surveyor-General and, on his retirement, Sergeant-at-Arms. His works are represented in the Latrobe Library, Melbourne. He died in 1882. Edit or add to this biography
