Leslie Sprague (1943-.) Australia

Biographical Information

Leslie Sprague, was born in Geelong, Victoria, in 1943 and grew up on a sheep and cattle farm which straddled the Bream Creek between Barwon Heads and Torquay Victoria.

The experience of growing up in that place, alive as it was in bird and animal life and rich in the history of aboriginal occupation, set the measures by which much of his art would later be informed.

Following a degree in Fine Art at Chisholm ( later Monash University) where he majored in printmaking, he produced works on a number of series. Works include bronze sculptures, sound, poetry and other media on themes relating to Man in Landscape. These include Burke and Wills, Ludwig Becker, Daisy Bates and Charles Sturt and the ornithologist Samuel White.

Much work has also been done in outback locations such as the Simpson Desert, the Oodnadatta Track, the Finke River flood plain and on various station properties around Alice Springs. This has mostly been site specific installation work, with photographs the only remaining record. This body of work mostly relates to the presence of "absence" in the landscape such as the great journey pathways of fish along the 100 million year old bed of the Finke River.

Other works revolved around structures such as old salt-encrusted cattle yards, nesting places of zebra finches, flight paths of hawks.

Leslie has had numerous exhibitions in metropolitan Melbourne and regional galleries, and continues to work at his studio south of Ballarat. Edit or add to this biography
