Biographical Information

Max Steinmann was born in Switzerland, and studied at the Ecole Nationale d'Art Decoratif de Nice, (Beaux-Arts) in France for five years. He painted in Switzerland and Southern France from 1935, however not full-time. In 1958 he emmigrated to Australia with his family and after four years became a full time artsist. He produced over 1500 oil paintings between 1961 and 1994.

Based in Bathurst, NSW, he travelled regularly throughout rural NSW and southern Queensland depicting many historic homesteads, landscapes and genre scenes. He was also an exceptional portrait painter.

He won a number of art prizes and his work was included in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize.

He is the father of artists Heinz Steinmann and Evelyn Steinmann.Reference: Edit or add to this biography
