Charles Alexandre Lesueur (1778-1846) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in France in 1778, Charles Lesueur was a naturalist and zoological artist. He studied at the Royal Military School and in 1800 joined the 'Naturaliste' on a surveying expedition along Australia's southern and western coastline. Lesueur made detailed drawings of Aborigines, and assisted the chief zoologist Peron to sketch the wildlife. Their work was recorded in a three volume account of the voyage. From 1816 to 1825. Lesueur worked as a natural sciences curator in Philadelphia, United States of America and then taught drawing in Indiana until 1837. He died in France in 1846. Lesueur's work is represented in the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and in the Mitchell Library. Edit or add to this biography
