Constance Stokes (1906-91) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in Victoria in 1906, Stokes studied in Melbourne and Europe. On her return to Australia she became a leader of the modernist movement. She frequently painted female nudes, and it was these paintings which brought her to public notice. She exhibited in the 1952 Art Council of Britain Exhibition of Australian Contemporary Art and in the following year she held a one-woman show in Melbourne. Her works are represented in several state and provincial collections. She died in 1991. Edit or add to this biography
