Eileen Rosemary Mayo (1906-94) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in England in 1906, Eileen Mayo arrived in Australia in 1953, after studying art and sculpture extensively in London at the Central School and Chelsea Polytechnic under Henry Moore, and then in paris at the Academie Monmartre under Fernand Leger.

She soon built a reputation as a gifted artist (illustrator, calligrapher and muralist), a designer (coins, stamps and tapestries) and printmaker.

In 1957 she designed a series of posters highlighting some of the continent's exotic wildlife, including koalas and the Great Barrier Reef. A poster depicting a kangaroo in a stark desert landscape is one of the most notable Australian travel posters ever produced.

She also spent time in New Zealand from 1962 where she taught at the Canterbury School of Fine Arts..

She illustrated books, contributed to English and Australian periodicals and designed ten Australian postage stamps, and was also known as a writer and teacher, also teaching at the National Art School Sydney.

Her work is represented at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Australian state galleries.

She died in Christchurch in 1994. Edit or add to this biography
