Eric L. Stewart (1903-72) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in Melbourne in 1903, Stewart had no formal art training. His life and art are still something of a mystery. Almost completely unknown until after his death in 1970, his paintings are usually from Aboriginal legendary themes. It was not until 1971, the year after his death, that Clifton Pugh came upon a number of his works in an Echuca junk shop. These paintings formed the nucleus of an exhibition at Melbourne's Powell Street Gallery in 1972. Edit or add to this biography
