Ernest Salter (1896-1974) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in England in 1896, Ernest Salter was awarded a decoration for his service in World War I. In 1922 he arrived in Australia intending to farm, but after a year moved to Melbourne and worked as a shoe designer. He studied art at the National Gallery with Max Meldrum and joined the Victorian Artists' Society. Principally a landscape and seascape painter, he worked mostly with oils, but also with pastels and watercolours. Salter later helped form the Heidelberg District Artists' Society to help young artists. He died in 1974. Edit or add to this biography
