Francis McCracken (1879-1959) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in Northern Ireland in 1879, Francis McCracken moved with his family to Australia as a child and grew up on a cattle station.

He then went to New Zealand and studied at the Elam School of Art in Auckland.

During World War McCracken served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) in France. He was wounded I whilst serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

He returned to study at the Royal Scottish Academy Life Schools and won a travelling scholarship to Europe. He travelled widely in Europe and North Africa and exhibited at the Paris Salon and Royal Academy.

McCracken exhibited occasionally in New Zealand, but spent his later years in Scotland where he died in 1959.

His work is represented in major New Zealand art galleries. Edit or add to this biography
