Frederick Strange (1807-73) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in England in 1807, Frederick Strange was transported to Tasmania in 1838 after being convicted of theft. Originally a house painter, on his release on parole in 1841 he set himself up in Launceston as a drawing teacher and portrait painter. He received a conditional pardon in 1848 and he continued to make watercolour drawings of streets and buildings, for which he became well known. With the advent of photography and the closure of his portrait business due to declining demand, he became a grocer. Strange died in 1874. His work is represented in the Launceston art gallery.
