Gladstone Eyre (1863-1933) Australia

Biographical Information

Colonial School painter Gladstone Eyre was born in Melbourne in 1863.

He studied under van den Houten in Melbourne and under Knut Bull in Sydney.

A member of the Art Society of NSW from 1883, he exhibited a portrait of Mrs Langtry in that year and became known for his portraits of government officials.

His posthumous reputation depends more, however, on his landscape, bush and coastal paintings.
