Gustavus Ferdinand Von Tempsky (1828-68) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in Prussia in 1828, Major Gustavus von Tempsky was a painter and adventurer who fought in Nicaragua and Guatemala before settling down in Scotland with his family. In 1858 he sailed for Melbourne to dig for gold at Bendigo. Finding none, he took his family to New Zealand in 1862 to search for gold at Coromandel. He later became head of the Forest Rangers and led guerilla fighting against the Maoris. He was killed in 1868 by a Hau Hau fighter. Von Tempsky painted watercolours, usually of Maori and British fighters. His work is represented in the Hocken and Turnbull Libraries. Edit or add to this biography
