Biographical Information

Born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand in 1887, Flora Scales went to England to study animal painting in 1908. She returned to New Zealand in 1912 after exhibiting at the Royal Academy. She left again for Europe after World War I, studying in Paris and Munich, and apart from a short trip to New Zealand in 1934, remained in Europe and England until 1972. She painted continually, but rarely exhibited. Her work was brought to public notice in 1975 during a retrospective exhibition in Auckland. Flora Scales died in 1985.
