Biographical Information

Hugh Ramsay was born in Glasgow 1877 and arrived in Australia in 1878.

He studied painting in the National Gallery of Victoria School in Melbourne from 1894-99 and in Paris at the Academie Colarossi from 1900-02.

He was also an organist and choirmaster at the Congregational Church, Ascot Vale. As a runner-up for the National Gallery of Victoria Travelling Scholarship in 1899, he became a travelling companion for G. W. Lambert who had won the scholarship that year and they subsequently spent much time copying old master paintings together in the Louvre.

Ramsay went to Paris in 1900 and was very successful at the New Salon, having four of his five pictures accepted in 1902.

He contracted tuberculosis and returned to Melbourne.

Ramsay died in 1906 at the height of his career, having been an active artist for only 10 years.

A self-portrait is in the National Gallery.
