Biographical Information

Isaac Walter Jenner was born at Godalming, Surrey, UK. in 1836.

He joined the Royal Navy; went through the Crimean War in the Black Sea and was on the 'Royal Albert' in the Baltic.

He retired from the navy in 1865 and practised as a marine painter at Brighton and exhibited at the Royal Academy.

In 1883 Jenner settled in Brisbane and took a leading part in forming the Queensland Art Society and in founding the Queensland Art Gallery, where he is represented by a marine painting. His influence on his fellow artists was considerable.

He is regarded as the "father" of Queensland art, his studio at Taringa was a centre which attracted leading Queensland artists of the time, and among the artists encouraged by him was J. J. Hilder.

Jenner died at Brisbane in 1902, and left a record of the beginnings of art in Brisbane which is in the possession of the Mobsby family of Brisbane.
