James Peele (1847-1905) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in Geelong in 1846, Peele was known for his oil paintings of scenic beauty.

He started work at age 14 as a bank clerk and mooved to New Zealand in 1865. He worked for the Bank of New Zealand and was promoted to branch manager in 1883. He worked in that capacity in Rangiora and Amberley.

In 1889 he resigned on a pension due to deafness, and decided to take up painting as a profession.

He went to Melbourne to study and won 1st prize and the gold medal of the Victorian Society of Artists for a painting of Otira Gorge.

Peele taught and painted in Adelaide and Melbourne and made excursions to New Zealand in the summer months.

He later returned to New Zealand to live, and died in Canterbury in 1905. Edit or add to this biography
