Alfred Mault (1829-1902) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in South India, and exceptionally well educated, Mault trained as a civil engineer, working firstly in Scotland, England and France before applying to the Tasmanian government for a position in 1882. Arriving in 1883, he was appointed to undertake the 'parliamentary' survey for the Derwent Valley railway, a project he later oversaw. Working on sanitation projects, he planned water supplies for several northern Tasmanian towns in 1889. A career public servant, he lectured on sanitary science and hygiene, also presenting papers on Hobart's drainage and tides, Antarctic exploration and practical forestry. Mault died in Hobart.
