Alfred Sharpe (1830-1912) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in England in 1836, Alfred Sharpe trained as an architect, and is believed to have arrived in Auckland in 1859. According to a letter written by Sharpe, he spent his first twelve years farming in the north. He began exhibiting in Auckland from 1871. In 1885 he was awarded a silver medal for landscapes. Sharpe moved to Newcastle, Australia in 1889 where he apparently stayed until his death in 1908. As well as painting, Sharpe, who was deaf and dumb, wrote poetry and articles for newspapers both in New Zealand and Australia. His work is represented in major galleries including the National Art Gallery and the Hocken Library in New Zealand and Mitchell Library in Australia. Edit or add to this biography
