Biographical Information

Born in Melbourne in 1879, James MacDonald studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne, Westminster School London and at Julian's in Paris. As a painter he exhibited in Europe, USA and Australia. However he was best known as art critic for the Melbourne 'Herald' and 'The Age' and as the director of the New South Wales and Victorian state galleries.
