Biographical Information

John Morrissey was a Victorian artist whose work included graphic art, and painting in the mediums of watercolour and oil.

During his 40 years as a working artist he won many major awards for his paintings in both watercolour and oil. Many of his paintings were sold to overseas collectors.

John held six one man exhibitions in Queensland, and in Victoria at the Velaquez and Kosminsky Galleries in Melbourne. He also held joint exhibitions with such artists such as Donald Cameron, Lance Sullivan, Ernest Vogel and C. Septimus Lloyd.

John was a student of, and painted with Ernest Buckmaster for a period of time. Buckmaster said of his watercolours: "No mistakes made in handling a difficult medium." He taught Life Drawing at RMIT, taught oil and watercolour at the Mordialic Art Group and conducted his own classes at Cheltenham. John Morrissey is named in the "Australian Encyclopedia" as one of Australia's best pen and ink artists.

He was a member of the Victorian Artists Society and the Bread and Cheese Club.
