Biographical Information

Born in Scotland in 1832, John MacKennal was apprenticed to a Liverpool sculptor before his arrival in Victoria in 1852. He worked on the goldfields before engaging in an architectural modelling business in Melbourne. He received commissions for portrait busts, medallions and carvings. A foundation member of the VAA, he frequently contributed to overseas exhibitions. MacKennal, who was the father of Sir Edgar Bertram MacKennal, died in 1901. Edit or add to this biography
