Biographical Information

Born in Brisbane in 1922, John Rigby was educated at Central Technical College in Brisbane and then went to work for a signwriting company in Brisbane.

However he longed to be a fine art painter, and his first public showing was in 1941, with the Royal Queensland Art Society, exhibiting in the junior section.

That same year he joined the AIF and served until the end of World War II. After the war he worked as a freelance commercial artist and also as a sports cartoonist for the Brisbane Sunday Mail.

From 1948 to 1950 he did a diploma in fine art at the East Sydney Technical College and in 1955 held his first solo exhibtion at the Johnstone Gallery in Brisbane, and entered the Archibald Prize for the first time. The same year he won the Italian Government Travelling Art Scholarship, which allowed him to live, study and paint in Italy and Britain.

In 1974 he bcame head of fine art at the Queensland College of Art, a position he held for 10 years. After that, as a full-time painter and was sought out to judge competitions, open exhibitions and conduct art classes throughout the state.

In 1994, was awarded an honorary doctorate from Griffith University for his services to the arts in Queensland, followed nine years later with a Companionship of the Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences

In January 2004 the Museum of Brisbane presented Portraits: John Rigby, an exhibition of more than 40 years of Rigby portraits, many exhibited in the Archibald Prize, the Doug Moran Portrait Prize and the Australian Women's Weekly Portrait Prize.He died on 18 October, 2012, aged 89 years.
