Kathleen (Kitty) Airini Vane (1891-1965) New Zealand

Biographical Information

Kathleen Airini Vane was a daughter of Captain Gilbert Mair, a Native Land Court Judge, and his wife Eleanor Kate Sperry, herself an accomplished painter.

From the age of 21 Kitty Mair studied in London at the Slade School of Art and was in Brittany with a party of students when World War I began in 1914.

She served as a nursing aide in France and in 1917 married the Hon.Ralph Vane, a younger son of Lord Barnard.

After his death in 1928 she travelled and painted in North Africa, Cyprus, Malta, Fiji and New Zealand. She finally returned to New Zealand in 1951.

Airini, or Kitty, Vane was notable for her watercolours of mountain and seashore, the latter often centred on pohutukawa trees in flower. She died in February 1965 at Lang's Beach near Waipu. Edit or add to this biography
