Biographical Information

Born in Brisbane in 1915, Leonard Shillam studied sculpture in Brisbane, London and in Italy. He married fellow student Kathleen O'Neill, and from 1939 to 1949 worked as a poultry farmer. He became a full time sculptor from 1950, holding joint exhibitions with his wife. Shillam taught art, becoming head of the sculpture department at Brisbane's College of Art. He received several commissions from Queensland churches and schools, and in 1986 was awarded the Order of Australia for services to sculpture. Shillam's work is represented in state galleries in Sydney and Brisbane, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and in several regional galleries. Edit or add to this biography
