Biographical Information

Born in England in 1843, Louis James Steele studied extensively in Paris and Florence. He exhibited at the Royal Academy where he became known as an engraver and etcher. He arrived in New Zealand in 1886 and opened a studio in Auckland. Principally a portrait painter, he taught several well known artists, the most famous being Charles Frederick Goldie.
