Marianne Baillieu (1939-2012) Australia

Biographical Information

Marianne Baillieu (nee Dalhoff) was born in Stockholm to Danish parents, and in 1948 moved with her family first to California for a year, and then New Zealand.

She attended Nelson Girls College and then studied arts and psychology at Canterbury (NZ) University. However she did not complete the course and commenced work with an Auckland psychiatrist. After several years she followed her brother who had moved to Australia and she worked at Monash University while studying anthropology and and politics.

She met her future husband< ian Baillieu in the mid 1960s and was married in 1967.

They lived in South Yarra, Vicotria and in 197, she opened Realities Gallery showing mainly Australian artisits, firstly in South Yarra, and later in Toorak. Almost every major living Australian artist and emrging artist showed at the gallery, some in solo shows others in group shows.

In 1980 she sold the gallery and began painting, in an abstract style that was uniquely hers. She had 15 solo exhibitions and was included in many group shows. She was a finalist in the Archibald, Sulamn and Blake prizes.

She died of ovarian cancer in 2012.
