Nicholas Chevalier (1828-1902) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in Russia in 1828, Chevalier studied painting in Europe before moving to Australia in 1855.

He became known as a painter of Australian landscapes and as a cartoonist and lithographer - the first cartoonist on the Melbourne 'Punch' (1856-61). He later travelled to New Zealand and in 1865 was commisioned by the Otago and Canterbury Provinicial Councils to make Pictorial Surveys to be exhibited in London, in order to attract new settlers.
