Born in Devonshire, England in 1888, John Weeks arrived in New Zealand with his family in 1892. He studied at Auckland's Elam School of Art and later at the East Sydney Technical College. After serving in the First World War he continued his studies at the Canterbury College of Art, and in the UK and Europe. He was an extensive traveller, spending time in England, Australia, Europe and North Africa, studying at the Edinburgh College of Arts and Andre L'Hote's Academy in Paris before returning to teach at Elam in 1929. A fire in the school in 1948 destroyed 300 of Weeks' drawings and paintings. In 1958 he was awarded the OBE for services to art. He died in 1965. Edit or add to this biography
