Studies: Graduate in the 1950's in Art Studies from the National Art School; (old East Sydney Technical College). Fellow luminaries included Keith Looby, Ken Done, and Elizabeth Cummings, to name a few.

Review: Arthur James' drawings and paintings are dynamic and imaginative, and reflect thorough background training in drawing. Sometimes light may outline the ghostly shapes of animated musicians in smoke-filled blackness, providing a feeling that could be described even, as sensual. It is for his contribution to the international fame of Australian jazz and Australian jazz musicians, that he was awarded in 1994, an Order of Australia Medal. A quotation from the artist, published in Sydneys' "North Shore Times", says it all__"I've felt it. I've lived it". (The legendary El Rocco Jazz Cellar in Sydneys' Kings Cross, was the centre for jazz musicians in the late 1950's and early 1960's. The artist attended art classes in the day-time and operated the coffee lounge at night!). Arthur James is an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society of New south Wales. He is a recognised illustrator, having done series' of artistic drawings published in books and renowned periodicals, e.g., "Australian Artist", "Pastel Artist International", and "International Artist".
