Biographical Information

Born in England in 1827, Dowling studied in London and later in Tasmania under Thomas Bock. He arrived in Australia in 1839 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1856. He had the distinction of painting all of the remaining Tasmanian Aborigines in 1876. His works are widely represented in public collections in Tasmania and Victoria. Dowling died in London in 1886.
