Biographical Information

Arthur James Murch, painter, sculptor and official war artist during World War II, was born in Croydon, NSW, in 1902.

He was apprenticed to a firm of engineers he became an engineering draughtsman but abandoned engineering in 1924 and at the Royal Art Society School under Datillo Rubbo and James R. Jackson, 1921-25 and at East Sydney Technical College under Rayner Hoff, 1923-25; London, Chelsea Polytechnic; Rome, under Prof. Sciotino, 1925-27.

Murch returned to Australia in 1927 and became well known as a sculptor-assistant to George Lambert during 1928 to 1930.

He won many awards, the most notable being the Archibald prize in 1949.
