Biographical Information

Born in Portugal in 1853, Loureiro was A world-renowned artist.who studied at the Royal Academy in Lisbon prior to his arrival in Australia in 1884. Awarded the Prix de Rome by the Royal Academy, Lisbon. Studied in Rome and Paris, exhibiting for three years at the Old Salon before arriving in Melbourne in 1884, where he began to teach and paint. With Roberts, Streeton, Conder, Mather, Catani, etc.,he formed the Australian Artists Association. He taught art in Melbourne, and after a long period in Australia he returned to Portugal where he died in 1932. Loureiro's work is represented in the National Gallery of Victoria.
