Biographical Information

Bour in America in 1858, William Smedley studied at the Pennsylvania Academy and under Jean Paul Laurens in Paris. A painter and engraver, he came to Australia with F B Schell and W C Fitler to work on the production of the 'Picturesque Atlas of Australasia'. On his return to USA he won a number of art prizes. His works are represented in several major American collections and in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Smedley died in 1920 Edit or add to this biography
