Charles Meryon (1821-86) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in France in 1821, Charles Meryon was a French naval officer, draughtsman, etcher and sculptor. From 1842 to 1846 while he was stationed at Akaroa in New Zealand, he visited other ports - including Hobart - making drawings of the scenery, the wildlife and native inhabitants. On his return to Paris in 1846, he began making sculptures, and also producing etchings from his travels to Australasia. However, he began to lose his sanity and spent some years in an asylum in Paris. He died in 1866. Meryon's work is represented in the national galleries of Australia and New Zealand, several Australian state galleries and public collections. Edit or add to this biography
