Clyve Brodrick Elliott (1919-94) Australia

Biographical Information

Clyve Brodrick Elliott was born in Leichhardt, Sydney in 1919.

He attended the Julian Ashton Art School, full time for two years, after leaving school, and later completed an apprenticeship in lithography with John Sands, while continuing to attend evening classes at Ashton's under Henry Gibbons.

In 1941 he joined the army serving in the Cartographic and Hydrographic Units. In 1994 he took up employment as a surveyor and draughtsman for the Post Master General/Telecom and recommenced part-time classes at Ashton's under Henry Gibbons.

After World War II he became a surveyor and draughtsman for the Post Master General, and took up evening classes at Ashton's.

In the 1950s and '60s he was a finalist a number of times in the Archibald, Wynne or Sulman prizes, and sold his first painting in 1958.

In 1975 his painting 'Bush Idyll' won the Macquarie University Art Prize and in 1976 he won the Castle Hill Art Society Prize. Until he retired from Telecom in 1983, Clyve only painted in his spare time. He painted exclusively on board, and swapped from oils to acrylics in the 1970s.

His first exhibited work was 'Monday Wash', in the 1954 Dunlop Art Prize. Some of his early work was exhibited in the Archibald and Wynne Prizes.

Between 1958-1972 he painted intermittently. In 1958 he sold his first painting at the Royal Easter Show Art Prize.

In the 1970s he stopped dating his works. In 1972 he joined the Ryde Art Society, and in 1975 was awarded the Macquarie University Art Prize and in 1976 the Castle Hill Art Society Prize.

In 1983 when he retired he devoted himself full time to painting.

He painted almost exclusively on primed board (masonite and then MDF) and in the 1970s stopped dating his works. He moved from oils to acrylics in the 1970s, and became very skilled in the use of acrylics.

He died in 1994.

In 1997 an exhibition of his work for sale was held at the Artarmon Galleries in Sydney. Edit or add to this biography
