Delaport Viola (Brownie) Downing (1924-95) Australia

Biographical Information

Born in Sydney in 1924, Brownie Downing was a sister of Desmonde Downing.

She worked as a commercial artist drawing children's fashion from 1942, and in 1947 began studying at the Julian Ashton School. During the 1950s Downing created designs for Christmas cards and pottery, and illustrated her first children's book.

In the late 1950s she travelled to Europe, spending some time painting in Ireland before settling in Spain. Brownie Downing is probably best known for her stylised drawings of Aboriginals. She died in Spain in 1995. Edit or add to this biography
