Alan Charlton (1948-91) New Zealand

Biographical Information

Born in England, Alan immigrated to Whangarei New Zealand with his family in 1973. He was a prominent artist and art teacher in Northland for many years.

Alan and his wife Zela established and operated Art Stop Gallery, a successful dealer gallery showcasing the diverse talents of New Zealand artists. As well as being an influential figure in the regional Northland art scene he was committed to local theatre, directing several productions which merged theatrical and artistic forms of practice.

His early NZ paintings extended the tradition of landscape painting that dominated the work of many NZ painters of the time. A increasing move towards abstraction combined with earlier formative interest in illustration which he never fully left behind typified his later work.

He passed away in the early 1991 leaving behind an extensive body of works. Edit or add to this biography
